Crochet Football Helmet Hat Pattern

Crochet football helmet hat pattern, Browns

IMG_2789

I have been promising Mike to make him this hat since last winter. I even bought the yarn and everything but I just never got around to it. I finally finished it (and got some pictures!). We live in North East Ohio so we are naturally Browns fans. The colors of this hat could easily be adapted to any other team.

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn in orange, brown and white
I hook
Tapestry needle
Gauge: First 8 rows measured from center to the edge= 3 1/2 inches

Directions:
Hat: (In Orange)
Row 1: Ch3. 8 hdc in 2nd from hook (8)
Row 2: 2 hdc in each stitch around (16)
Row 3: (1 hdc in first stitch, 2 hdc in next) (24)
Row 4: (1 hdc in first two stitches, 2 hdc in next) (32)
Row 5: (1 hdc in first three stitches, 2 hdc in next) (40)
Row 6: (1 hdc in first four stitches, 2 hdc in next) (48)
Row 7: (1 hdc in first five stitches, 2 hdc in next) (56)
Row 8-19: 1 hdc in each stitch around. Fasten off. Weave in ends. (56)

Earflaps:
Row 1: Join in 8th stitch from center of back. Ch 2. Sc in next 10 stitches (10)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in next 10 stitches (10)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc decrease over first two stitches. Sc in next 6 stitches. Sc decrease over last two stitches (8)
Row 4: Ch 1, turn. Sc in next 8 stitches (8)
Row 5: Ch 1, turn. . Sc decrease over first two stitches. Sc in next 4 stitches. Sc decrease over last two stitches (6)
Row 6: Ch 1, turn. Sc in next 6 stitches (6)
Row 7: Ch 1, turn. . Sc decrease over first two stitches. Sc in next 2 stitches. Sc decrease over last two stitches (4)
Row 8: Ch 1, turn. Sc in next 4 stitches. Fasten off. Weave in ends (4)
Join in bottom of earflap. Ch 2. 2 Hdc in same stitch. 1 hdc around entire earflap. 2 hdc at base of earflap.
Repeat for other side.

Stripe:
In Brown. Ch 57. Dc in 3rd from hook and stitch across. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Join with white. Sc around edge of brown stripe. Don’t stitch the one end of the stripe, like in picture.
Fasten off. Leave a long tail for sewing. Sew stripe onto hat. I found it easiest to safety pin the stripe to the hat to keep it in place.

Modifications:
This hat is tight fitting stretchy beanie. To make it looser add and increase after Row 7: (1 hdc in first six stitches, 2 hdc in next).
To make it sized for a women stop at Row 18.

A big thank you to Cheryl at Erma's Inspirations for advice on how to make the earflaps :)
